Does the NBA use brand new balls or broken in balls?

In the NBA, brand new basketballs are used at the beginning of every game. These new balls are made of leather and have a shiny surface. However, before they are used in a game, players have the opportunity to break them in during warm-ups or practice sessions. This is done to ensure that the basketballs become a bit softer and easier to grip. Players may rub the balls against their jerseys or bounce them on the court to help break them in. Although the NBA starts with brand new balls, they are slightly modified by the players themselves to make them more comfortable to handle during the game.
